the "Things" section of connec+ipedia is the most content-heavy and interconnected part of the Table of Contents. It is the section where the community can share resources around a topic as well as link foundations and organizations to that topic. When designing and reworking (this is a wiki after all!) the order of the things section, we decided to refer to the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities developed by the National Center for Charitable Statistics and used by the United States Internal Revenue Service and the Foundation Center.

The Foundation Center uses the NTEE classification system to classify both grants and grant recipients (typically nonprofits or governments), so we have based most of our classification decisions on the use of the NTEE by the Foundation Center. An expandable and collapsible, easily-read version of Foundation Center's use can be viewed here: http://foundationcenter.org/ntee/index.html

Our classification needs are for topics in general, rather than for classifying organizations and grants. Therefore, our topics and categories are organized with some variation, and with more simplicity.

If you have suggestions for improving and/or altering the classification of things, please leave a comment below:

  • a nonprofit group asks:

"We would like to conduct a social impact study of our members that  illustrate the programmatic impact nonprofits have on the community. We have been able to find reports for the economic impact of nonprofits, but not a compilation of their social impact, their program benchmarks, as it were. Do you know of any reports or organizations that are doing this kind of work that we could link with or use their survey work?"

Indeed, we have extensive information here:

    Social Impact of Nonprofits
    Philanthropy and Social Impact
