  • Martha & Mary Ministries grew from a small group of hospice nurses, clergy, physicians and others who had been privileged to serve many persons as they were dying.  We had experienced the great blessings that come to those who are dying and to the ones who share in this final journey.

We also knew many people who needed far more than they received in their last months and days—people who died in pain, who were afraid, who died alone or family members overwhelmed by their circumstances.

    We asked:
What should we be doing, especially as Catholics in Oregon, to assure that people die with dignity and comfort without resorting to physician assisted suicide?

Exploring the needs of dying persons in the Portland area, we answered this question with the vision of Martha & Mary Ministries. We became a 501(C)(3) nonprofit (first with the name Martha & Mary Home.)

    Our Ministries

    We are creating...

    A HOME

for those who cannot remain in their own homes.
Our licensed home will provide around-the-clock care for up to five residents who are enrolled in hospice. We anticipate serving approximately 60 residents per year plus numerous family members. Care will be funded through Medicaid, private pay and donations.

    because...

Most people want to die in their homes but many don't have anyone to care for them or the means to hire caregivers.

Of the many assisted living facilities, nursing homes, adult care homes available, none is specifically dedicated to caring for people in the last months of their lives.

Many facilities provide good end of life care, but some have little experience, expertise or staff available to provide the presence and care needed in the final weeks.

Family members often find it difficult to visit their dying loved one and to leave their loved one in a facility.

  • a nonprofit group asks:

"We would like to conduct a social impact study of our members that  illustrate the programmatic impact nonprofits have on the community. We have been able to find reports for the economic impact of nonprofits, but not a compilation of their social impact, their program benchmarks, as it were. Do you know of any reports or organizations that are doing this kind of work that we could link with or use their survey work?"

Indeed, we have extensive information here:

    Social Impact of Nonprofits
    Philanthropy and Social Impact
